Our Church Body
The Wisconsin Evangelical Lutheran Synod (WELS) was founded in 1850 by German missionary societies, intent on serving many of the people who had emmigrated from Germany. These immigrants had left their homes to begin a new life in America but had no one to provide the spiritual guidance they had enjoyed in the home country.
Since that time, the WELS has grown into a much larger church body serving the spiritual needs of people from many different backgrounds and nationalities. Today the synod is comprised of more than 1,200 congregations in the United States and 595 congregations in many other countries worldwide.
The WELS is a church body that is:
![]() |
Bible believing - We believe that the Bible is divinely inspired and therefore is inerrant in all its parts. As such it is the only sure guide for all matters of faith and life. |
|

Confessional - We hold to the Lutheran Confessions as contained in the Book of Concord of 1580, because they are a correct exposition of biblical teaching; |
|

Conservative - We willingly submit ourselves to the truth of the teachings taught in the Bible. Therefore we believe that the mission of the church is to preach the Gospel to lead people to eternal salvation through Christ, rather than to serve as an agent of social change. However, the Gospel itself, if lived faithfully, will have a beneficial effect on society |

Mission-minded - In keeping with the teachings of Jesus, we believe that all mankind is born sinful and in need of the salvation that can be found only through the work of Jesus Christ. Therefore we carry out an extensive program of world missions to make Christ known to the world. |
