Split Grades
![]() |
In generations past, it wasn’t unusual for a whole school to share one classroom. For a multitude of reasons, that is no longer viewed as a desireable situation.
However, it wasn’t as bad as some today would have you believe. A one-room classroom (Grades Kindergarten - 8th Grade) allowed the upper classes to assist the lower grades with individualized instruction. In addition, the lower classes were allowed to listen in on the upper grade instruction, and many advanced students learned more from listening to the upper grade instructions.
At St. John’s we still have a few split-grade classrooms. That is not necessarily a bad thing. Smaller class size enables the teacher to give more individualized instruction, plus the upper level students are able to assist those in the lower grade.
Listen to the personal experience of one of our members: “On a personal level, I was enrolled in several different multi-grade classrooms in the public school. And I probably gained more from these settings than I did in a one-grade setting. For I was able to listen in to the lessons of the upper grade and actually participate in the discussion. I remember answering any number of questions that the upper graders were unable to answer. And I’m sure, my experience was not unique.” [DK]
So before you think that your child cannot achieve a quality eduction in a multi-grade classroom, consider the advantages of such a classroom. And consider this -- our students really do achieve better test results than many public school students (in spite of their one-class rooms).
