Grade 1-2

Mrs. Cynthia Natsis   In Grade 1 your child will gain the basic building blocks of reading, writing, and arithmetic. While Federal programs consider it a success if every child can read by the 3rd grade, all of our children gain this skill by the end of 1st grade. This equips them for further success in the later grades.

In order to ensure that your child is ready for 1st grade work, we test for emotional, psychological, and physical levels of maturity. This is not an IQ test or measure of the child’s intelligence, but simply a guage of their readiness for the challenges of the 1st grade. For the future welfare of the child, we will advise the parents to consider more than chronological age when enrolling their child.

Your child’s Christian Education really takes off in Grade 1. More in-depth study of Bible lessons is provided, and the child is trained to memorize passages from the Bible and Luther’s Small Catechism. Commiting portions of the Bible to memory equips the child to apply Biblical principles to his or her life.

In Grade 2 many critical skills are further developed. Building on the success of reading and writing in the earlier grades, the child is led beyond the dynamics of learning how to read, and to the larger plane of reading for comprehension, understanding and knowledge. These skills are not to be underestimated. They lay the foundation for the critical thinking skills that will be used not only in the grade school years, but also throughout the high school and college years.

Your child’s training in faith also deepens during these years. Studies in Bible History, Christian teaching, and hymnology equips the child to apply Christian truth to his or her life. Memorization skills are further developed as the child learns more and more of God’s Word, the Bible.

Your child’s teacher, Mrs. Natisis, has a Master’s Degree in Reading and is well equipped to introduce your child to the joys of learning.
