Church Picnic
The annual church picnic will be held on Sunday, September 3 at noon on our school grounds. Members are asked to bring a dish to pass and their own tableware.
Unique to this year’s picnic is the opportunity to play a game of Civil War Baseball (Massachusetts Rules). This was a favorite of the soldiers in both armies of the Civil War. In these days of baseball’s infancy, two different sets of rules were in vogue.
The New York rules were more popular with civilians and gradually became the game as we know it today. The Massachusetts rules were more popular with the soldiers but have since faded from use. We’re going to resurrect the old game this summer. If you like, you can try to capture the spirit of the game, too, by dressing in period costume but that is not required. The only requirement is to come ready to enjoy yourself. By the way, you don’t need to bring your baseball glove -- it can’t be used under these rules!
